Job Description
Texas A&M Forest Service is seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented team member who has a passion for the forest and drinking water connection. This individual will be a part of an integral team in the Forest Resource Development division that works to deliver technical assistance to support the agency mission of assuring the state’s trees, forest and related natural resources are protected and sustained.
The Staff Forester / Woodland Ecologist will provide leadership to municipalities, utilities, water planning groups and other drinking water stakeholders in the greater Houston area to engage them in advancing source water protection in priority drinking water supply watersheds, whiled elevating the role of trees and forests in maintaining watershed function. Occasional duties include training and response activities associated with the emergency response mission of the agency and support for additional agency programs.
Responsibilities:

  • Urban Water Resources Education, Outreach and Technical Assistance.
  • Enhance partnerships/Coordinate program activities/Participate in stakeholder meetings.
  • Model urban forest canopy scenarios to assess watershed benefits.
  • Technical writing and public speaking.
  • Support Urban Forestry and East Texas Water Resources program delivery.
  • Firefighter and other emergency response support functions.

Work Conditions: This job may require exposure to harsh environmental conditions such as wind, sunlight, rain and temperature extremes. It may also require walking long distances, standing for extended periods, twisting, bending, reaching, kneeling lifting and carrying heavy objects. Job stress can be frequent when confronted with deadlines of various projects, frequent travel, long hours and adverse weather conditions.

Education and Experience:
Required Education: Bachelor’s degree in Forestry or other natural resource field.
Preferred Education: Master’s degree in Forestry
Preferred Experience: Two (2) or more years of experience in urban forestry, land management, conservation or hydrology
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Required Knowledge: MS Office.
Preferred Knowledge: GIS. iTree suite of tools
Required Skills: Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, both with technical and non-technical audiences.
Required Abilities: Work effectively with minimal supervision.Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others, including internal and external partners.
Registrations, Certifications, and Licenses:
Required: Valid Texas driver’s license or ability to obtain one within 30 days of employment.
Preferred: SAF Certified Forester. ISA Certified Arborist
