Job Location

The position is based out of Thunder Bay with regional travel required.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Direct work experience in silviculture planning, project implementation and data collection activities, including those required in regulated manuals under the Crown Forest Sustainability Act.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the forest industry in Ontario
  • Working knowledge of legislation, policies and procedures governing forest management planning in Ontario including current forest management practices and principles used in the Boreal Forest.
  • Familiarity with current government directions, priorities and forestry initiatives in the province of Ontario.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to prepare professional reports and presentations.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, see the big picture and adapt quickly to change.
  • Strong attention to detail, analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • You are experienced with computer applications and data analysis (Microsoft 365, ArcGIS, etc.) and have ability to keep up with new technologies.

Job Description

In this position, you may be supporting all FMP development and related implementation activities, including:

  • Supporting FMP planning processes, project management and reporting (AWS, AR, Revisions, values updates and FMP amendments).
  • Supporting planning and implementation of forest renewal programs on the Wabadowgang Noopming and Lac Seul Forests.
  • Prepare proposals and operating budgets.
  • Attending Local Citizen Committee meetings.
  • Representing NorthWinds to a high professional standard at meetings that include government, forest industry and Indigenous client groups.
  • Performing other tasks as needed to support NorthWinds forestry projects and clients.

Relationship Management and Communication Skills

  • You have practical and operational experience working with Indigenous communities and organizations in Ontario.
  • You have a sound understanding and awareness of Indigenous culture, values, and traditions, in particular the historic and current state of Indigenous affairs in Ontario.
  • You are familiar with current issues and developments affecting Indigenous peoples and their rights in Ontario.
  • You have the ability to stay current with government strategic direction and objectives relating to Ontario’s Indigenous peoples in order to provide support and direction.
  • You have knowledge of Indigenous peoples’ governance structures to support effective engagement, consultation and accommodation.

Required Licences, Certifications and Work Experience

  • Undergraduate forestry degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Registered Professional Forester or eligible to become one in Ontario.
  • Valid G class drivers licence.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience in the core competencies outlined.
  • Proof of eligibility to work in Canada.
