We are looking for a self-motivated and science-minded individual to join our research team within the Forest Reclamation and Reforestation Team at the Centre for Boreal Research (CBR). This position will execute applied research projects supporting the forest reclamation research team within the centre. This position is focused primarily on greenhouse and lab-based research (80%) though some field work assistance is anticipated (20% seasonally). The ideal candidate will possess a variety of skills including independent thinking and strong organizational and interpersonal skills to work in a fast-paced and busy team setting. Experience with native plant propagation, particularly in a scientific setting, is a necessary pre-requisite for this role. This role can be physically demanding, and significant time is spent standing and walking to conduct plant propagation and maintenance activities. This position will also support routine lab activities as well as desk-based work including data entry and organization and assist with technical reporting to industry clients.

This position will require relocation to Peace River, Alberta; we are looking for the successful candidate to start January 3rd, 2024.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plant propagation activities in greenhouse where activities may include filling containers with soil, sowing seeds, watering and fertilization of plants
  • Setting up and maintaining plant growth trials
  • Routine lab work such as seedling characterization, weighing samples and cleaning containers
  • Data entry – attention to detail accuracy being of critical importance
  • Assisting with technical reporting

Skills & Abilities:

  • Experience propagating native plants and processing plant/soil samples
  • Vegetation identification training (and experience).
  • Be physically fit as this position requires extensive time spent standing and walking.
  • Demonstrated competence in Microsoft office.
  • Ability to work independently and lead junior team members.

Qualifications:

  • Diploma in related biology or forestry discipline
  • Minimum 12 months of related experience
  • Class 5 license with clean drivers abstract.
  • Equivalencies may be considered

Remuneration: $55,321.24 – $73,019.96 annually, plus a comprehensive benefits package. (Classification – Research Assistant ll).

This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement.
