Hood Industries Lumber division is seeking a Sawmill Relief Operator at our mill in Waynesboro, MS. This is a non-climate-controlled mill, meaning temperatures can be extremely high in the summer and cold in the winter.

As a Sawmill Relief Operator, you will be responsible for learning and operating multiple types of equipment: Sorter, Trimmer, Edger, Curve Saw, Debarker, Stacker, Head Rig and Sorter. The skilled Sawmill Relief Operator plays a vital role in plant safety and production by operating machinery throughout the sawmill to meet and exceed quality and production goals.

Relief Operator Responsibilities:

  • Cross-train on production equipment and mobile equipment to provide coverage for vacations, absences, etc.
  • Promote a safe work environment by adhering to safety, housekeeping, and environmental guidelines, policies, and procedures.
  • Learn and perform multiple operator functions within the sawmill to expected performance levels.
  • Learn to apply work processes and understand how they lead to increased productivity and reduced waste of useable products.
  • Maintain communication with other departments, management and employees and notify them of any problems and/or concerns that may restrict the efficiency of production.

  • Experience in a sawmill, manufacturing or other industrial environment preferred.
  • (1) more years in a leadership role within a manufacturing setting
  • Ability to follow all required work safe practices. This would include wearing all required PPE in designated areas, confined space safety, safe chemical handling, fall restraints, etc.

Working Conditions:

  • Must be willing and able to work in a hot, humid, cold, and noisy industrial environment. Standing, walking, climbing, repetitive bending, repetitive stooping, repetitive reaching with arms and repetitive grasping with hands and fingers
  • Must have the ability to lift up to 30 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally. Must be able to work safely in a fast-paced environment working around production machines, warehouse equipment, forklifts, and large trucks.
