Overview

– We are seeking a summer camp leader for 3 weeks of summer camp.

– Also seeking casual/substitute leaders to fill in when needed (to cover sickness, vacation, etc.).

About us

Radicle Roots is an outdoor, forest-based program, providing opportunities for children to connect with themselves, others and nature in a child-led, leader-supported, free-play environment. We visit different outdoor areas and offer activities based on weather and season; always with strong emphasis on supporting free-play and imagination.

Responsibilities

– Work closely with other leaders to plan and prepare activities and projects, especially utilizing materials available in our environment and/or recycled materials;

– Daily preparation of gear and materials;

– Introduce and lead activities, projects and outings, with emphasis on forest activities such as tool use, fire building, shelter building, and forest exploration (tree climbing, water exploration, etc.);

– Ensure a safe and healthy environment for all children and conduct ongoing dynamic risk assessment during play and activities;

– Support children in child-led play and projects;

– Support children in their interactions together, co-creating a community of safety, respect and kindness;

– Observe and document play and activities; reflect and responsively plan based on play;

– Maintain program tools and equipment.

Requested qualifications and interests

– Experience and/or training working with children, especially in outdoor and creative settings;

– Appreciation for child-led play, managing risk in a dynamic environment, compassionate conflict resolution

– Appreciation for nature and our place within it;

– Ability and desire to be enthusiastic outside in all weather;

– Interest in forest and wilderness activities and skills, such as plant and animal identification, knot tying, shelter building, fire building. (Skill considered an asset.);

– Commitment to forest best practices, including: weather-appropriate clothing, leave-no-trace practices, and understanding local plants and wildlife;

– Clear criminal record check and vulnerable sector check;

– Current First Aid with CPR (or ability to complete prior to start date).
