Role Responsibilities

Reporting directly to the Finance Specialist, this position oversees the financial operations of the Forestry Division. As the Forestry Finance Assistant, you are accountable for financial administration and supervising staff within the Aircraft Accounts section. Integrated and consistent service delivery aligned with relevant policies, procedures, and guidelines, is crucial for the role’s effectiveness.

Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Ensuring adherence to financial practices aligned with policies and program goals
  • Preparing financial reports and forecasts for aviation expenditures, statistical and historical reports, project cost reports as well as accruals
  • Leading administrative staff in the Aircraft Accounts section, monitoring workload, and providing performance feedback to optimize resource utilization
  • Establishing clear performance agreements and learning contracts, providing training, coaching, and mentoring
  • Ensuring compliance with Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) regulations and integrating safety practices into daily operations
  • Supervising staff to ensure adherence to expected standards and alignment with Government of Alberta objectives, policies, and procedures
  • Performing complex tasks impacting service delivery to the Division, internal personnel, and external stakeholders including expenditure forecasting, reporting as well as vendor payments
  • Employing critical thinking, analytical skills, and effective communication to address diverse and complex issues

High School Diploma and (4) four years of related experience in financial roles including accounts payable, accounts receivable, financial reporting or bookkeeping. Supervisory experience and strong skills in excel are required.

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education
Assets include:

  • Experience with Accounts Payable and Reporting databases
  • Proficiency in FIRES/CAS contract administrations and cost recovery module
  • Strong analytical and mathematical skills
  • Knowledge of policies, procedures, agreements, regulations, and standard operating procedures relevant to Finance program delivery in the department
  • Effective communication abilities when working with staff, management, and peers
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise good judgment and tact in handling sensitive and confidential matters
  • Excellent communication, organizational, supervisory, and interpretation skills
  • Problem-solving and decision-making capabilities based on sound judgment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and government systems
  • Understanding of complex coding structures
  • Above-average leadership skills essential for effective performance in this role


This is a full-time, permanent opportunity located in Edmonton. This position works Monday to Friday, 8:15 AM – 4:30 PM, 36.25 hours a week.

This position may require final candidates to undergo a security clearance.
