This is to fill one full-time permanent position working 75 hours bi-weekly.

The Forest Management Branch is responsible for management of Yukon’s forest resources and is committed to responsible and sustainable development. The branch is embarking on a continuous improvement process in order to effectively align its resources with the needs of its clients. A strong emphasis on integrity and professional conduct will contribute to building and maintaining relationships with various agencies within the Government of Yukon and other levels of government.

As a forester you would be responsible for all aspects of forest management in a geographic region of the Yukon including implementation of higher-level forest resources management plans, development of timber harvest plans and roads, licensing and permitting, engaging with first nations, industry, stakeholders and the public.

Approved candidates may be provided reimbursement of relocation expenses if required, in accordance with the Interview and Relocation Expense Directive.

Essential Qualifications

  • Degree in Forest Resource Management or related field
  • Experience with forest management including developing and/or applying forest harvesting plans, policies, standards and guidelines
  • Experience in applying or administering resource legislation, preferably related to forest management
  • Experience working collaboratively with various levels of government, First Nations, stakeholder groups, the public and forest licensees (examples of this could be negotiating and resolving issues)
  • Experience with project management including developing and supervising contracts would be considered an asset
  • A professional forester designation would be considered an asset.

Candidates who have post-secondary education combined with significant experience in the above-mentioned demonstrated abilities may be equally considered.

Desired Knowledge, Skills and Suitability

We are looking for an individual with a strategic and strong client service orientation to complement the Forest Management Branch team. This individual must be able to draw on their own experiences to problem-solve difficult and complex situations, resolve conflict and reconcile diverse perspectives. This individual must have strong communication skills and display competencies in the area of self-management, initiative and social awareness in order to create strong partnerships and maintain the positive image of the branch. The position may functionally supervise one or more development foresters, forest technicians, contractors or support staff.

Conditions of Employment: Valid Yukon Class 5 driver’s license, Pre-Employment Medical Clearance

Job Requirements: Travel to various locations in the Yukon on a regular basis
