Community Forester (Full-time)

We are seeking a highly organized and safety-focused tree enthusiast to serve as our Community Forester. This person is our head field position and will work hand in hand with the Community Engagement Coordinator to coordinate tree planting and giveaway projects as well as supervise the Workforce Crew Leader to manage tree care and contract work. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented and passionate about trees, environmental education, fieldwork, and project coordination.

$19-$21+ per hour commensurate with education, professional experience, certifications, and licenses (e.g., CDL, SC Pesticide Applicator, ISA Certified Arborist, TCIA Tree Care Specialist, SC Certified Landscape Professional).

Days and Hours:

October – April 40 hrs/wk, Tuesday – Saturday

May – September, 40 hrs/wk, Mon – Friday*

*Occasional Saturday workdays required


  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field
  • Valid Driver’s License & clean driving record
  • At least 1 year experience in field work
  • Familiarity with Google Suite
  • Clean background test & drug test
  • Experience hooking up, loading, unloading, securing loads, and driving trailers
  • Comfortable driving a truck and trailer with a 2500+ pound load
  • Must be able to perform manual labor outside in all weather conditions, including rain, snow, and 95℉+ heat
  • Must be able to work around ants, bees, thorns, pollens, poison ivy and oak, and other environmental risks
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds on a routine basis
  • Must be able to bend and stoop on a continual basis
  • Must be able to work effectively as a member of a team with a positive attitude.
  • Ability to work quickly and efficiently
  • Ability to work independently with little or no supervision.
  • Landscape experience is preferred, not required, training provided.
  • Communication and leadership skills


  • 2+ years experience in project management and/or community forestry.
  • SC Pesticide Applicators License
  • ISA Certified Arborist. If you are not an ISA Certified Arborist, meeting one the following ISA requirements for certification is preferred:
  • Have a two-year degree in arboriculture and two years of practical experience
  • Have a four-year degree in a related field and one year of practical experience
  • Have a minimum of three years of full-time experience in arboriculture.
  • Acceptable experience includes the practical use of knowledge involved in pruning, fertilization, installation and establishment, diagnosis and treatment of tree problems, or other services that directly relate to arboriculture.
  • Fluent in Spanish (written and spoken)
  • Familiarity with Southeastern tree species


  • Coordinate, oversee, plan, implement, and manage planting programs at parks, schools, neighborhoods, and greenspaces.
  • Outreach to schools, parks, greenspaces, and other partners to find tree planting opportunities.
  • Use the SC811 system to identify utility conflicts on the site before dig day. Verify a positive response for every site.
  • Design tree species layouts using right tree, right place methods.
  • Select quality nursery stock from local nurseries that meets Florida Fancy or Florida 1 Standards and American Standard for Nursery Stock standards.
  • Deliver trees and materials to sites.
  • Keep an accurate and detailed inventory of all trees planted, all tree maintenance activities performed, and site check conditions.
  • Manage contract work and projects for the workforce development team.
  • Supervise and train the Workforce Crew Leader and provide training and a positive, hardworking leadership example for crews. Serve as a stand-in crew leader when the Workforce Crew Leader is unavailable.
  • Present tree planting programs and other educational programs to and engage preK-12 students in tree planting.
  • Safely use and maintain hand tools and power tools.
  • Safely refill water tank from fire hydrants.
  • Serve as the safety manager for TreesUpstate.
  • Conduct quarterly and biannual site checks across service area and perform required maintenance including but not limited to: installing new trees, weeding, mulching, raking, pruning, edging, trimming, mowing, installing / removing staking, soil amendments, removing dead/damaged/diseased wood, removing small dead trees, etc.
  • Coordinate and implement the winter pruning schedule for trees in their 3rd and 5th years after planting. Safely use pole saws and other pruning tools.
  • Manage the tree care schedule and coordinate tree care grants with site partners. Create and manage a tree care schedule for seasonal crews and volunteer teams. Schedule and host volunteer days for tree care events.
  • Ensure that tree plantings and care & maintenance plans meet American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and International Society of Arboriculture(ISA), and American Standard for Nursery Stock standards.
  • Direct and coordinate tree giveaway events as needed.
  • Develop and present educational programs to industry professionals via our Tree Keeper Curriculum or specialized Lunch & Learns.
  • Create and maintain positive relationships in the community and with site partners, volunteers, and vendors. Represent TreesUpstate at events in a professional manner.
